Choosing Original Art for Your Home: A Collector's Guide

Buying original art is not a decorating decision. It is the beginning of a long conversation between a painting and a room. The painting will outlast the sofa, the wall paint, and the moodboard you started from.

Start with the wall, not the piece. Measure it. Live with masking-tape outlines for a few days. Most rooms welcome work that is larger than first instinct suggests.

Look at the light at three times of day. Morning warmth, afternoon flatness, and lamplit evening will each reveal a different painting inside the same canvas.

Then look at material. Acrylic on linen breathes differently from oil on canvas. Hand-stretched edges hold a weight that printed reproductions cannot.

Finally, give yourself permission to choose with feeling rather than logic. The works that age beautifully are the ones that already mean something to you the first time you see them.
